Jul 15th, 2008 | By Ara Rubyan | Category: Baking Soda And Peroxide Tooth Whitening

If you want to whiten your teeth with a minimum of cost and hassle, then using a mixture of baking soda and peroxide is for you. It is a tried and true method that will, when used consistently over time, help keep your teeth whiter.

Let’s look at the ingredients in more detail.

Hydrogen Peroxide

We’re talking about the stuff you can buy at your local drug store. It is usually going to be in a concentration of 2%-3%.

Here’s how it works: when you put peroxide on your teeth, a chemical reaction occurs. The peroxide turns into oxygen and water. During this phase, some foaming occurs. This foaming action accomplishes 2 things: it breaks down the film growing on your teeth. It also uncovers previously hidden places where bacteria live. Then, when you brush your teeth, your toothpaste is more effective.

Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)

There are multiple benefits to using baking soda. It is mildly abrasive. This means it will scrub your teeth without doing any damage. It also kills the micro-organisms that can cause gum and mouth disease. Lastly, it can neutralize acids that contribute to the damaging stuff that forms on your teeth, i.e., plaque.

Combining baking soda and hydrogen peroxide

Start with a small Dixie cup. Put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in. Then put in a heaping tablespoon of baking soda. Brush your teeth with this paste. When you’re done, rinse with mouthwash or water. Then brush with your normal toothpaste to get the fluoride.

Conclusion

Baking soda and peroxide tooth whitening can give you a cheap, safe way to keep your teeth white over time.
